On April 8, 2010, the Junior League of Raleigh sponsored a Career Fair in collaboration with the Brentwood Boys and Girls Club here in Raleigh. At this event, various professionals representing a broad variety of careers were available to speak to children aged 6 to 16 about their future career plans. Fr. Anastasios was invited to represent priests.
From 6:00 to 8:00 pm, children rotated between stations, asking each professional about his or her job, background, and what education was required to enter in to the chosen field. Many of the children were engaging and naturally curious about what it is like to be a priest. Some children posed questions, which while serious, were unintentionally humorous. Three in particular stood out in his mind:
Q: Are you Jesus? (asked by a very young child)
A: No. I am just his assistant.
Q: Have you ever cast out a devil? (asked by a teenager)
A: No. They only let the older priests do that.
Q: Do you ever use bad words?
A: I am a human just like you, and I make mistakes. I try to fix my mistakes and become a better person.
The event was also beneficial insofar as several adults were exposed to the Orthodox faith by asking Fr. Anastasios various questions about his status as a priest, affiliation, and missionary endeavors.
We pray that all the children who attended the event will grow to become responsible adults, making wise career choices, and we pray for the work of the Boys and Girls Club, which helps these children avoid taking a bad path in life. We also pray for the charitable work of the Junior League of Raleigh, which organized and facilitated this event. God bless you all.
